SLAKE DURABILITY APPARATUS

This equipment has been developed to assess the durability of rock to weakening and disintegration when subjected to  the simulated effects of climatic slaking. Slake durability is a simulated weathering test to determine abrasion resistance during wetting and drying cycles of  shale and similar soft rocks as used in embankments and other construction-related applications. Samples are alternately tumbled in mesh drums through a water medium and oven-dried for two cycles. The percent loss of mass is referred  to as the slake durability index. The device rotates two drum-shaped sample boxes at a speed of 20 revolutions per minute through a motor fixed on the  bottom of the device. The drum-shaped sample box is mounted on a bearing coated with lubricant, and there is no resistance when rotating. The drum-shaped sample box is made of corrosion-resistant materials and is equipped with two  water tanks.
